I like to think of this novel by Junichiro Tanizaki as Jane Austen in pre-war Oskaka. It’s the story of four sisters and the quest of the two older sisters (Tsuruko and Sachiko) to find a husband for the next-to-the youngest (Yukiko). They go through a matchmaker (miai), so they find potential husbands but she continues to say no. The youngest sister (Taeko or Koi-san)can’t get married until her older sister does. Nothing happens in this novel, but you can’t put it down.
